Day 43-A ride through Yellowstone to Big Sky Country

She said: Like I posted this morning, Paul took off from the South Entrance of the park early for his "ride through the park" of 68 miles and 3 Continental Divide crossings. I met a nice lady at the second Divide crossing from Rocky Hill. Julia was traveling through 10 states (including an Alaskan cruise) on her quest to visit all 50 states. She said after this trip she will only have Hawaii and Maine to have accomplished her goal. Safe travels Julia. After the photo ops at all 3 I went on to hike through some of the Middle and Lower Geyser basins. I saw (and smelled) several geysers, fumaroles (steam vent) and mud pots. The colors, heat, bubblings, and eruptions were amazing. Met up with Paul in Montana (yes, another state) outside the park in the town of West Yellowstone. It was a very commercialized type of town-marketing being just outside the park. We agreed to go on another 18 miles to Hebgen Lake where we are staying tonite. It is a beautiful lake with mountains all around. We are in a nice cozy cabin after 2 nights of camping in Yellowstone. I can see why they call Montana "Big Sky" country. Onward north toward Missoula tomorrow. Oh yeah-we finished the 8th map today-I'm not sure if we forgot to mention finishing the last few-with 4 to go!
He said: Paul is asleep on the bed. Climbing all morning and downhill the rest of the day. Nice day. Resting up to beat me at Nertz again. Paul wanted me to mention he kept seeing fly fishermen all day in the Madison River. It made him think of Craig. Paul hopes he will find himself in a river just like this one of these days. 92 miles.

Some Continental Divide information-we hope the blog is educational too.

This one's for you, Craig.

The bubblings from the geysers make their way to the creek.

Amazing colors.
The steam would blow by you when the wind picked up.
Woohoo! Another state!

1959 they had some kind of landslide here. Looks like the government will promote anything.

Lake Hegben-our view across the street.

Seen a few of these-told you we were in Cowboy Country!

  1. You guys are smack dab in the middle of the best fishing the west has to offer. Having said that, I think I could be distracted by the scenes in the park(s). I've seen it all on the Discovery and Nature Channels hundreds of times but I thought I'd seen the Grand Canyon too ---- until I stood on the edge and saw the Grand Canyon.

  2. We have been following you all the way. You are starting to enter some familiar land. When I went to school in Idaho, could see the Tetons in the morning, watch the sunrise over the Peaks, been hunting out site of Salmon. If you were going through Challis, great general store, stayed there hours listen to stories told by the owner at 1:00 am. Boated the Snake several times from outside Jackson to Idaho, most beautiful area in the states. Take Care. Gail & Lloyd
