Day 18-Over the Ohio from KY to IL?

She said: Well we made it into our third state, but there was no "Welcome to Illinois" sign so we had to take pictures of the ferry, with us in Illinois and the banks of the Ohio in KY on the other side of the river. We watched the weather last night and five day forecast said Steamy, Steamy, Humid, Humid, Humid. We couldn't figure out what the difference between steamy and humid was. Then we started the day and realized, humid is chicken broth and steamy is pea soup! I didn't get too far ahead of Paul all day, as there weren't many places to stop with quite a few miles in between, and I wanted to make sure he had plenty to eat and drink. I knew it was hot when I saw 3 cows wallowing in a very muddy pond-they looked like rhinos! Met several east bound riders today, all telling us of the great things that lie ahead for us. Evan and Andrew took a short cut and called us from Carbondale Ill. where they will be taking a rest day and having some work done on Andrew's bike. We will be there about 11 and hope to meet up for lunch. We are staying in a US Forest Service campground tonite at Lake Glendale Il. Went out for groceries and dinner in the closest place we could find-about 15-20 miles from here. We met up with Matt, a fellow west bounder that we hadn't seen since Va. He had some bike problems and had to rent a car, toured around for a bit and had just gotten back on the road on his repaired bike. Well I started to type the blog and we could hear thunder off in the distance. Have to get the rain fly on and I will finish this tomorrow. Rained through the early evening, then stopped-we stayed nice and dry, just trying to let the tent dry out a bit before I pack up and head off to Carbondale to meet Paul. He will have to do 2 posts tonite. 77 miles.

  1. It's stifling hot here tonight too. Congrats on reaching your third state! Perhaps if it gets much hotter the corn will start popping and you'll just have to provide water and Gatorade.
